With us you will be responsible for
Do you want to learn about the component technologies that enable the Internet? Do you want to learn about photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that are the optical version of those microelectronic circuits (ICs) that you find inside every electronics device? Then join our Photonics and RF Integration team and help us to develop photonics solutions at VTT.
We build photonic devices for various applications, including for instance, communications, sensing, 3D imaging, aerospace, etc. Photonics module integration is a multidisciplinary research topic that combines optics, optoelectronics, electronics (often high-speed/RF), precision mechanics and thermal management – both design and fabrication. You will be developing integration processes where functional modules are assembled using PICs, optical fibers, lasers, electronics components etc. A key task is connecting the PIC to the outside world by attaching several optical fibers to it with sub-micrometer accuracy. You will also be characterizing the component structures and their performance as well as analyzing and documenting the measurement results. All this will be done under the supervision of our experts. Most of the time you will be working inside our clean room facility using the equipment there.
Main responsibilities:
• Development and use of high-precision photonics component and fiber assembly process, including sample/part preparation, alignment process, adhesive bonding, automation algorithms/procedures.
• Characterisation and testing of the photonic components and assemblies
• Documentation and analysis of results
We expect you to have
• Bachelor’s degree from a relevant field (or equivalent skills)
• Knowledge about photonics (understanding the basics of optics, optical fibers/ waveguides, photodetectors, lasers, etc.), or at least background to learn quickly while starting the work
• Fluent communication skills in English
• Any hands-on experience on photonics and electronics laboratory experiments and/or manufacturing is highly appreciated
• Knowledge of electronics and photonics manufacturing technologies and of electronics components are highly appreciated
